The words spoken by the people forced to the edges of Australian society are born from a strong and positive vision for Australia. They speak with authority and their message emerges from their collective wisdom and experience. None of us can learn what is right if we fail to listen to what is wrong.

The Budget confirms one thing that both sides of politics agree on, and that's their belief in the existence of an undeserving poor. Easter manifesto

    Flattening the Church

    • Peter Kirkwood
    • 09 March 2012

Prominent lay Catholic leader and public servant Robert Fitzgerald argues that, as lay people now run most of the Catholic educational, health and welfare institutions, this leadership needs more formal recognition from the Church and should be extended further into parish and diocesan roles.

The wound of colonisation is not yet healed. The so-called Stronger Futures legislation, which will extend and deepen some of the worst aspects of the NT Intervention, is built on the falsehood that the wound does not exist or is an Aboriginal problem. It gives me no relish to be at odds with my Church. But it also gives me no joy to see people who are created in God's image unable to fully express their humanity, or live with the rights and dignity that heterosexual people are afforded. Published 25 September 2011

Recently I received an email from a young man in Queensland. He was writing to thank the St Vincent de Paul Society for the stance it takes on the side of people who are demonised for being unemployed. He told me his story. Here are some bits of it.

What difference does it make now that Mary MacKillop is a saint?

    • Frank Brennan
    • 14 October 2011

Mary visited Rome as a young religious woman when she was being persecuted by local bishops for being too independent. She got a good hearing from the Pope and great assistance from Fr Anderledy who became the Superior General of the Jesuits. If only Bishop Bill Morris could have received the same sympathetic hearing.
